The History of the Medway Towns Table Tennis League

The MTTTL was formed in late 1946 for a short season, replacing the old Rochester & District League, which had folded in 1939 at the start of World War II. The first secretary was Sid Groves The league faced its demise in the early fifties, when the committee resigned en-bloc.

Fortunately Len Bethell, the founder of Sturdee TTC, became Chairman and Len Foord Secretary.Later in the fifties it became the ninth largest league in the country, only surpassed by large towns such as Manchester and Birmingham. The league consisted of thirteen divisions. The first League Champions were Toronto, who played at the present Sturdee venue. Civil Service were League Champions for the next two years, including players John Denney, Dick Thornton and Jeff Hancock. After this though Sturdee TTC, consisting of teenagers, reigned supreme for the next seventeen years. In fact Sturdee I went undefeated for eighteen years. The first Annual Championships in 1947, with 134 entries, was held at Riverside Sports Club, The Esplanade.

Don Obray, MTTTL Ex-President, started his table tennis playing career on the 6th October 1944, aged 14, when the Sturdee Club was formed. He first represented Sturdee in the Youth League on 27th March 1946 and played continuously in the MTTTL until retiring in 2002 .His first title was Division 3 Champions 1949/50. The highlight of his career was beating Alan Wilkinson, the day after he had become Men's Champion. Don stepped down as President in 2008 and Ken Spree was appointed.

Ken started playing table tennis at Highfield Secondary School when he was 13 years old and the first club he played for was the Oakwood Youth Club, Maidstone Road, Chatham along with Dick Hawkins. He was encouraged by his friend Derek Rudd to join the Sturdee Club and in 1950 he joined them and subsequently went on to play for their second team.

He found early success at junior level when he was runner-up in the Under 17 singles in 1952 but went on to win the title in 1953. During his National Service, between 1956 and1958, he was selected to play for Bomber Command in the Inter Command Tournament at Stanford, London. Whilst in the RAF, he also won the Oxfordshire Men's Singles Championship.

Although Ken was runner-up in the Medway Open Singles in 1962, it was as a doubles player where he saw his main successes. Between 1957 and 1967 he won the Open Doubles four times and was runner-up on three occasions. He also won the Mixed Doubles twice with Marilyn Swan (now Dudgeon) and was runner up four times between 1956 and 1979.
In 1979 and 1980, he was runner-up in the Veteran's Doubles with John Denney and Mick Forrester respectively.
Ken played all his table tennis for the Sturdee club with the exception of a few years in the 1950s when he joined the Civil Service club in order to satisfy his desire to play against his Sturdee mates.
Ken finally gave up playing in 2002 and is currently the Chairman of the Sturdee club.

At the AGM in July 2003 Dinah Porter was appointed as Vice President of the MTTTL in recognition of her long and dedicated service to the league. Di, an ex-chairman of MTTTL and long time Secretary of Nomads, joined CTTC when they were founded in 1999 and played a large part in their early success before her resignation. She said that she felt very honored at this appointment.

In 2005, with National Lottery funding, the Howard Table Tennis Centre was built and became the "home" venue for both the Chatham Table Tennis Club and the Howard Table Tennis Club as well as providing a purpose-built facility for many Kent and Medway TT events.

Nowadays, these 2 clubs actively promote Junior Development in order to sustain the growth of MTTTL.
