Report: Final of the 40 th Charles Stampe Trophy Competition

The 40 th Charles Stampe Trophy Competition reached its climax on Friday with the final between Sturdee’s second and seventh squads. At least Sturdee would be ending their 33-year dearth of success in the competition. The last time Sturdee won the trophy was in the 1975/76 season, when coincidentally Sturdee I beat Sturdee II in the final, though Sturdee VI had been runners-up in 2000.

The Premier outfit of Wayne Youngs, Simon Forest and Richard Carden dominated the match from the start, overcoming adverse handicaps of between 14 and 32 to win by a 67-point margin. The only hiccup was when Youngs went down 62-63 to Scott Whale.

Attacking play from both Forest and Carden prevented the underdogs from getting into their stride.

Forest led the way beating Richard Harding 62-52, Carden beat Whale 62-50, while Youngs with 32 points in arrears beat Mick Chambers 62-55 and Harding 62-61 to secure a 30 point lead. Forest gained 15pts at Whale’s expense and Carden 11 at Chamber’s to ensure victory.

Mrs Stampe presented the trophies with daughters Cheryl and Diane in attendance.
