MEDWAY & KENT JUNIORS

Medway Secondary Schools Table Tennis tournament and the Kent Schools Individual Table Tennis tournament 11 February 2009

Approx. 90 secondary schools children from 6 Medway Secondary Schools (Greenacre Boys School, Chatham Grammar School for Boys, the Howard School, Hundred of Hoo School, Rainham Mark Grammar School and Rainham School for Girls) participated in this Schools Table Tennis event, held at the Howard School Table Tennis Centre.

The year 7 Boys:

Winner: Jack Hartland (Chatham Grammar Boys), Runner Up: Austin Edwards (Howard School)

Consolation Winner: Nathan Gardiner (Hundred of Hoo Secondary School), Charlie Haja-Alexendra (Howard School)

The year 8 and 9 Boys and Girls event :

Winner: Harry Lumb (Chatham Grammar School for Boys) Runner Up: Sean Gutteridge (Howard School)

Consolation 1 st place: Duncan Kent (Rainham Mark Grammar), 2 nd place: Darren Pearce (Rainham Mark Grammar) and 3 rd place: Chris Belchambers (Rainham Mark Grammar School)

The year 10/11 and 12 Boys event:

Winner: Alex Blow (Howard School) and Runner Up: Sam Driver (Howard School)

Consolation Winner: Joseph Hartland (Chatham Grammar Boys) and Runner Up: James Townsend (Chatham Grammar Boys)

The afternoon saw approximately 120 pupils from 24 Secondary and Primary Schools competing for in the Kent individual competition in 4 age groups:

The Under 11’s Kent Girls Winner: Katie Wilson Runner Up: Jessica Wen (Sutton Valence).

The Under 11’s Kent Boys Winner: Luke Savill (Borough Green Primary) and Runner Up Darren Velvick (Cranbrook Primary)

The Under 13’s Kent Girls Winner: Daniella Gray (Angley) and Runner Up:Lauren Beaumont (Rainham Girls)

The Under 13’s Boys Winner: Helshan Weerasinge (Judd) and Runner Up: Danny Lawrence (Hugh Christie)

The Under 16’s Boys Winner: Lewis Gray (Angley) and Runner Up: Ross Wilson

The Under 16’s Girls Winner: Kirsty Wilson and Runner Up: Claire Harvey

The Under 19’s Boy’s Winner: Phil Thomas (Howard) and Runner Up: Adam Molley (Leigh City Technology Academy)

The winner of these age groups will then get the opportunity to represent their county and school at the National School individual tournament in April 2009, at Doncaster.

The Kent Schools Table Tennis Association were over whelmed by the support from Teacher’s and parents from those school for their support, including the Howard School and their Table Tennis Centre. Volunteers and local coaches were vital to in making this annual tournament a great success; ‘we were very pleased to find that this many pupils were regularly enjoying Table Tennis at their school’.
