In the second round of the Charles Stampe Trophy Competition the new scoring system was shown to assist the higher-ranking teams with three premier sides advancing to the third round.

Sturdee II led the way defeating Division 4 underdogs Howard XIII by 30pts.
Simon Forest, Richard Carden and Wayne Youngs had to overcome handicaps of between 40 and 48 points per game to achieve their success. Sturdee won their first 8 games against Matthews Reynolds, Duncan Kent and Danny Clarke to take a 51-point lead but Reynolds made a late challenge beating Carden 83-62

Sturdee III also progressed to the third round having to defeat old-timers George Gurr, Peter Pay and Peter Worthington. Neil LeMilliere and Steve Bannister won
their opening games 62-61 and 62-47 respectively but Pay got the better of Ted Tydeman 62-69. Bannister shared the points with Worthington, LeMilliere gained 5 points at Pay's expense but Gurr beat Tydeman 56-68 to give Sturdee just a 2-point
lead going into the final games. Bannister came to the rescue with a 62-48 score against Pay, Tydeman beat Worthington 62-44 and although Gurr beat LeMilliere
62-67, Sturdee won by 29.

It was a closer fought match for Sturdee IV over Invicta II and although Sturdee held the lead all the way the winning margin was just 17-points. Keith Ludlam and Paul Kelly got them off to a good start against Mike Forrester and Ian Stears but Kevin Flannery replied with a 51-59 defeat of Bernadette Austin. Kelly restored a 21-point lead beating Forrester 62-49 but Flannery and Stears cut this to 13pts. Kelly won 62-54 with Flannery, Forrester won 54-64 with Austin and Ludlam sealed victory beating Sears 62-56.

Sturdee's seventh string has joined their teammates in the third round with victory over Chatham's Furious. Sturdee had racked up a 28pts lead by the halfway stage, Mark Barfoot with 57-62 and 48-62 wins over Ian Kelly and Lee Townsend respectively, Mike Chambers won 43-62 against Townsend but Marylyn Dudgeon was not so fortunate loosing out to Michael Carlton 67-62 and Kelly 65-62.
Carlton cut the lead to just 11 by beating Chambers 75-58 but the revival was short lived as Dudgeon and Chambers ensured victory by 38pts with 50-62 and 46-62 wins over Townsend and Kelly.

It was a seesaw tussle between Riverside II and last year's winning finalists Alex Blow, Sam Driver and Paul Welsh. Barry Skates and Wes Heaton got Riverside off to a good start with 47-62 and 50-62 scores against Blow and Driver. Welsh countered beating Bob Ellis 52-48, Driver held Skates 60-62, Blow beat Ellis 62-52 and Welsh
won 71-60 over Heaton to give the youngsters a 6-point lead. However, experience
came to the fore, as Welsh was crushed 49-62 by Skates and Blow lost out to Heaton 45-62 to give a 21-point winning margin.

Invicta V's Mick Barber, Arthur and Kathy Hall had a runaway victory over Howard IX, with Steve Blackwell, Tony Bull and Ismael Essop unable to stop the trouncing by 80-points, the only consolation was Bull getting the better of Kathy 52-62.

Similarly, Invicta IV found the handicaps to their advantage beating Howard XI by a massive 160-points. Keith Ball, Laurie Wilkie and Peter Sullivan went unscathed in the encounter.

Vikings IV's newcomers George Horne and Michael Benson with John Stewart's support came out winners in their match with Invincible by a 58-point margin, the only resistance coming from Richard Hawkes and Pat Gates.
Their 3rd team clubmates, Gary Hentschel, Derek Myers and Eve Gurr were not so fortunate, as they went down by 34 to Rainham 83 III in a tit for tat struggle. After sharing the points in the openers Gurr went down 15-62 to Mick Hambleton to give Rainham the upper hand, but Vikings came back with winning scores of 65-58 between Myers and John Coleman, 70-48 between Hentschel and Hambleton to give them a 14 -point lead. This was gradually whittled away though as Trythall beat Gurr 55-62 and Hentschel 50-70, Hambleton beat Myers 57-62 and Coleman beat Gurr 40-62 to ensure victory.

Javelin youngsters Sean Weddell, Tom Law and James Townsend were unfortunate to loose out to Rainham 83 VII seniors Hugh Daukes, Tim Davie and Kyri Zambas who came from behind to win by 34-points. The juniors were comfortably holding their own in the early stages and had established a 28-point lead after five games but a 37-70 defeat of Townsend by Davie put Rainham in the driving seat. Rainham kept up the pressure as Law lost out to Zambas 58-60 and Townsend to Davie 50-67.

Rainham VI won the Division 3 clash with Howard X youngsters Nicole Sears, James and Andrew Williams by 74-points. It was all square on 167 after three games and although James added a couple of points off Konrad Stanczyk, afterwards it was down hill all the way, as John Caplin, Bob Rooke and Stanczyk won the rest of the games.

Rainham IV could also have joined their clubmates in the third round but in error they also played Bob Rooke; so had to conceded the match to BT Engineers

Howard II thought they had won their close fought clash with Dartway by 13-points only to discover later that the wrong handicaps had been added and Dartway should have won by 23-points. To be fair to both teams the match is to be replayed.

Anchorians I beat their fourth team clubmates by just 15-points. The top team got off to an excellent start, Jacques Domingue winning his openers 55-62 and 61-62, Jeff Norman 50-62 and Paul Jenkins 55-62. But Graham Bruce stopped the rout getting the better of Jenkins 74-60; Gary Kimber continued the recovery beating Norman 68-62 and Tony Slater won 68-62 off Jenkins to take a fragile 3-point lead. However,
Domingue and Norman took control with 53-62 scores over Bruce and Kimber to clinch victory.
